This is the ominous 833-feet-high, north-facing cliff of Marpi Point where thousands of Japanese, mostly civilians, committed suicide rather than surrender. The ledge about half way down is where most of the bodies landed and is the site of what is described in the text as "The Jungle of Skeletons."
