(Left)
Native Sergeant Vouza with a Japanese sword, hunting for more Japanese. He had
earlier been captured, then interrogated by the Japanese as to where the Marine
positions were. He knew, but refused to tell, so they bayoneted him multiple
times and left him for dead, but he managed to crawl back to the Marine lines
and warn them about the surprise Japanese attack that was about to happen. When
the attack occurred, the Marines were ready, and the Japanese were slaughtered.
Vouza then went on to be a scout for the Americans that added greatly to our
successes. The grateful Marines made him a Sergeant. After the war, he was
knighted by Queen Elizabeth. A statue has been erected to this brave man on
Guadalcanal. At right, native Sergeant Vouza gets his revenge on the Japanese.
Rumor was that he was paid for each head.
